Today at 7:30 PM the debate on the Commission's proposal starts at the plenary session

02/04/2014

Tonight at 7:30 PM at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels, the Commission's proposal to restrict EU ETS to European regional airspace will be debated by the MEPs. The final vote is scheduled tomorrow Thursday 3 April 2014 at around 11:30.

In short, the text that will be presented is the 30 January 2014 report from the Environmental Committee, but the MEPs will most probably propose amendments to try to recreate the 4 March 2014 trilogue compromise, which was rejected by the Environment Committee on 19 March 2014.

If the MEPs vote a text that is similar to the trilogue compromise, it will come into force immediately. If the text is different from the trilogue compromise, it will have to go to the European Council for approval.

If the Council approves it, it will come into force. If the Council proposes further amendments, it will go back to the plenary session for a second reading. If the process is not completed before 24 April 2014, the original Directive 2008/101/EC will continue to apply for the 2013 monitoring period.
