The European Commission publishes the TK benchmark!

26/12/2011

Today the European Commission has published the benchmark values which will be used to allocate greenhouse gas emission allowances free of charge to more than 900 aircraft operators.

Publication of the benchmark values enables operators to calculate their free allocation of allowances up to 2020. One benchmark has been calculated for the 2012 trading period and another for the 2013-2020 trading period:
  • In 2012, each operator will receive 0.0006797 allowances for free for each tonne-kilometre
  • Between 2013 and 2020, each operator will receive 0.0006422 allowances for free for each tonne-kilometre each year
If we call "TK 2010" your reported TK data in 2010, this means that you will receive [0.0006797 * TK 2010] allowances for free in 2012, and [0.0006422 * TK 2010] allowances for free each year between 2013 and 2020.
In order to estimate your allowances shortfall in 2012, you need to estimate your 2012 emissions (equal to [2010 reported emissions * (1 + growth rate)] or [most recent 12 months emissions * (1 + growth rate)]), and deduct the number of free allowances received.

According to BlueNext, the current price of a carbon allowance is 11.28€.
