Verifavia is a founding partner of Aviation Carbon Events, the organiser of the successful conferences Aviation Carbon 2012 and Aviation Carbon 2013 that for the first time brought together the Aviation and the Carbon Finance communities.

 

Aviation Carbon 2012


The first conference Aviation Carbon 2012 - Carbon Planning and Trading Strategies for Airlines was held at the London Heathrow Marriott Hotel on 8-9 February 2012.  The conference attracted over 300 delegates from 62 countries worldwide, including representatives from more than 100 airlines and business jet operators.
This was the first time the aviation industry had got together with the carbon sector in a major forum to discuss and learn about carbon trading. In addition to a panel session of airline, carbon trading, legal and European Commission representatives, delegates heard updates, knowledge and advice from experts on how emissions trading under the EU ETS and the carbon market work.

Twelve companies and organisations took stand displays. Most expressed great satisfaction with the level of enquiries they received and said they were interested in returning next year. Many delegates, sponsors and exhibitors said they enjoyed the networking opportunities offered by the event and the evening cocktail reception at the end of the first day.

A post-conference online survey of delegates produced a tremendous response (over 40%). Of the respondents, 85.3% rated the conference overall as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’, with the conference venue and facilities scoring 84.5%.

Aviation Carbon 2013


The second conference Aviation Carbon 2013 - EU ETS Compliance and Prospects for a Global Scheme was held at the London Heathrow Marriott Hotel on 19-20 February 2013.
Following the tremendous success of Aviation Carbon 2012, which attracted over 300 delegates from 62 countries including representatives from 110 airlines and business jet operators, Aviation Carbon 2013 took place on February 19-20 2013 and attracted over 200 delegates.

Aviation Carbon 2013 was timed perfectly to allow all stakeholders to learn about the status, consequences and impact of the Commission's 'stop-the-clock' proposal, and at the same time receive practical advice and the latest up-to-date information on administrative issues and trading in the carbon markets.

Aviation was about to face a landmark year as efforts towards a global carbon scheme gathered pace at ICAO. Aviation Carbon 2013 brought delegates up to speed on progress and informed them on what such a scheme might look like.

Aviation Carbon 2014 or 2015



Aviation Carbon Events is now considering helding its third strategic conference Aviation Carbon 2014 or Aviation Carbon 2015 either in fall 2014 or in spring 2015. This is an open letter from Aviation Carbon Events to all past delegates of Aviation Carbon 2012 and Aviation Carbon 2013

'In October 2013, the ICAO Assembly agreed to develop a global market-based measure to limit the growth of international aviation emissions, with a decision to be made at the next Assembly in 2016 on whether to proceed with a scheme from 2020. Following the outcome, the European Commission has presented proposals for the next steps for the EU ETS. These plans include extending the one-year ‘stop-the-clock’ scope in which only intra-EU flights were covered to what the Commission describes as a ‘hybrid’ approach in which emissions from all flights to and from EU/EEA airports are covered for the portion within EU/EEA airspace.

In addition, the mandatory reporting and surrendering of permits for both 2013 and 2014 will not be required until March/April 2015, effectively creating a two-year gap. The reason for this, argues the Commission, is to allow time for the necessary legislation to be approved by the EU institutions and Member States, and also to refine the details of the new regulation that will come into force for the period up till 2020.

As the proposals go through the legislative process, and are therefore subject to change and probable international opposition, this is a time of uncertainty and it is hard for us to plan our next Aviation Carbon event that we have previously held in February. The two-year gap, assuming it is agreed, also means that aircraft operators will have no need in early 2014 of one the event’s primary aims, which is to inform them of action they must take to comply with current EU ETS regulations.

We feel it best therefore to hold off Aviation Carbon 2014 until later next year, most probably in early November, when things may be clearer and the next compliance period will soon be due. One year on from the ICAO Assembly, we will also be able to update our delegates on moves towards a global carbon scheme.

We will also be looking to fulfil one of our own ambitions for our event, which is to extend its scope and broaden its appeal beyond just the EU ETS and market-based measures, and perhaps cover other relevant areas in separate streams – fuel efficiency management and aviation biofuels to name just two that have been suggested to us. Aviation Carbon has become a great success due to the practical nature of its content, rather than being just another ‘talking shop’, and we will aim to keep it that way, whatever our direction.
