GHG Verification (airlines)

Verifavia provides independent carbon inventory verification according to the ISO 14064, the GHG Protocol and/or the Bilan Carbone® methodology.

Overview

Whether voluntary or mandatory, independent verification brings several benefits to a company's carbon inventory:

  • It increases the accuracy and reliability of the reported data
  • It adds credibility to the reported data for internal and external stakeholders
  • It enhances the level of confidence in the sustainability information

Carbon Inventory verification

Verifavia can independently verify your carbon inventory data according to the ISO 14064-3 standard and the GHG Protocol.

The ISO 14064-3 standard specifies principles and requirements and provides guidance for verifiers conducting or managing the verification of GHG assertions. It can be applied to organizational or GHG project quantification, including GHG quantification, monitoring and reporting carried out in accordance with ISO 14064-1 or ISO 14064-2.

The ISO 14064-3 also specifies the requirements for selecting GHG verifiers, establishing the level of assurance, objectives, criteria and scope, determining the verification approach, assessing GHG data, information, information systems and controls, evaluating GHG assertions, and preparing verification statements.

Together with the ISO 14064-3, Verifavia uses the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (GHG Protocol), which is the most widely used GHG accounting tool for organisations.

Most of our team members have followed and successfully passed an External Lead Verifier Training course, a GHG Emission Verifier Training course (ISO14064), a GHG Protocol and/or a Bilan Carbone © training course, and have considerable experience in auditing carbon emissions and carbon footprint reports.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has published a useful document that describes the verification process.

We are verifying the Carbon Footprint and/or Environmental KPIs of Ryanair GroupTUI GroupFinnairQatar Airways GroupPlay, JetBlue Airways and EasyJet Group.

'UK Mandatory reporting' verification

Although there is no statutory requirement to have your environmental data audited, companies reporting under the UK Mandatory reporting are encouraged to have their carbon footprint verified.

According to the UK Environmental Reporting Guidelines, action iv of chapter 1., listed benefits of verification include:

  • avoid a reputational risk in disclosing misleading data
  • provides a check on the value and authenticity of the data in the public domain
The ISO 14064-3 is one of the two standards for the verification of GHG reports that are recommended in the Guidelines.

Bilan Carbone® verification

The production of a Bilan Carbone® requires both methodological expertise for completing the GHG emission evaluation and reduction project, and technical expertise for using the various Bilan Carbone® tools.

A pre-requisite is that the production of a Bilan Carbone® must be carried out by a person who followed the three training modules developed by Association Bilan Carbon covering the Bilan Carbone® method:
  1. Bilan Carbone® – basic training in the system
  2. Bilan Carbone® – advanced training in the system
One of our team members followed and successfully passed the two training modules and is a recognized Bilan Carbone® expert.

Although independent verification is not strictly required, Verifavia can provide independent GHG verification and certify that a carbon footprint report meets the requirements of the Bilan Carbone® methodology.
