CORSIA statistics from ICAO

12/10/2021

On marking the 5th birth anniversary of CORSIA, ICAO has organized a webinar with its stakeholders to share their experience and feedback on CORSIA which could help to move it forward.

Here we would like to bring up a few interesting statistics that were shared during the ICAO’s webinar. As of 30th September 2021,

  • 116 states had submitted 2019 Co2 emissions through CCR.
  • 91 states had submitted 2020 Co2 emissions through CCR (reporting of 2020 emissions still ongoing).
  • 586 MtCo2 reported to ICAO for the year 2019.
  • By considering the Covid impact on aviation, the 2020 reported emissions to ICAO as of Sept 2021 are 249 MtCo2. (Operators are still reporting 2020 emissions).
  • Based upon the latest COVID 19 scenarios, CO2 emissions of 2020 is expected to show a massive drop of approx. 50 % from the estimated value of 570 MtCo2 from the previous Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) assembly held in 2019.
  • CAEP estimates that if the baseline remains at the 2019 level for 2024-2035, the offsetting requirement could range from 230 to 1700 MtCo2.
  • 107 states have been volunteered for their participation in CORSIA from 2022. This shows a significant increase in numbers from the year 2021 (88 states). Please find below a screenshot where you can identify this document from ICAO’s website. The document (as of Sept 2021) with the list of states is also attached below.

The second edition is applicable from 1st January 2022.
