Preparing for 2020 EU ETS, Swiss ETS & CORSIA emissions reporting

As a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic, 2020 was undoubtedly the most challenging year ever for the aviation industry as a whole, and for the airlines' staff in particular. In spite of the extreme difficulties, together with our clients, we managed to successfully complete the EU ETS / CORSIA verification of 260+ airlines from around 100 countries. We thank our clients for making EU ETS and CORSIA a priority, and for working hard with our teams to achieve compliance.

We truly hope that 2021 will be a year of recovery and 're-birth' for the aviation industry. We take this opportunity to wish you, your colleagues, and your relatives a Happy, Healthy, and Successful Year 2021!

With the start of the 2021 verification season for EU ETS, Swiss ETS, and CORSIA, we discuss some of the challenges aircraft operators might face during the 2020 data verification, including a few updates from ICAO and the European Commission, as well as some information about a new verification procedure: virtual site visits. [...]

Swiss ETS latest updates

In late November, the European Commission issued an updated version of the EU ETS Annual emissions report (AER) template that facilitates Swiss ETS reporting together with EU ETS reporting. There are few changes in the template, which are mostly reflected through the addition of Swiss ETS-specific sections. In general, flights departing the EEA and arriving in Switzerland shall be reported in the EU ETS sections of the AER, while Swiss domestic flights and flights departing from Switzerland and arriving to EEA shall be reported in the Swiss ETS sections of the AER. [...]

The latest on Brexit and the UK ETS

With the end of the Brexit Transition period on the 31st of December 2020, the United Kingdom has officially withdrawn from the European Union, fortunately with a deal in place. This has a wide-ranging impact on the climate change action undertaken by both entities under the EU ETS scheme. The United Kingdom is now introducing and regulating its own emissions trading scheme, the “UK ETS”. Our previous newsletter brought you all the pertinent information on this initiative and this newsletter will update you on the latest developments. [...]

New release of the Small Emitters Tool (SET) and the
ICAO CO2 Estimation and Reporting Tool (CERT)

In late December 2020, the 2020 SET and 2020 ICAO CERT versions have been released. The underpinning methodologies for both tools have been updated based on the latest fuel burn figures available.

Both tools can be used as a primary monitoring method for operators eligible to use a simplified approach and both tools are available to all operators for data gaps filling. It is important to keep in mind that the latest versions of the tools must be used to estimate the 2020 CO2 emissions. [...]

Sustainable Aviation Fuels and latest ICAO News

2021 marks the beginning of CORSIA’s Pilot Phase. The Pilot Phase is the first compliance cycle, during which airlines must not only monitor, report and verify their carbon emissions, but also offset any growth in their emissions from 2019. The offsetting obligation presents an incentive to actively reduce emissions in order to reduce the amount of offsets purchased and cancelled via one of the approved offsetting programs.

Since 2011, more than 40 airlines have operated some 300,000 commercial flights using Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), and that number is expected to grow rapidly as the SAF production costs decrease. The aviation industry has adopted various innovative projects to achieve the goals of a Carbon-Neutral Growth and a green future. [...]

United Airlines opens up doors to Carbon Capture Technology

United Airlines has become the first in the industry to opt for Carbon Capture instead of offsetting, and has dedicated a large investment in the Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, which is one of the proven ways to significantly reduce airline CO2 emissions and has the potential to capture billions of tonnes of CO2 per year. By adopting measures like DAC and Sustainable Aviation Fuels the airline is looking to reduce its emissions in half by 2050, but can DAC be a widespread solution applied on a larger scale, to a significant portion of the aviation industry? [...]
